SYNAESTHESIA – SERGE RACHMANINOFF PRELUDE OP.3 N.2

Synaesthesia is a new and experimental project all around the new-media visual performance in real time applied to the classical music repertoire.
This is a huge topic, already part of previous and important studies that involved many artists in the pasts.
Kandinsky once said:
“Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the harmonies, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul”.
The concept that color and musical harmony are linked has a long history, intriguing scientists such as Sir Isaac Newton.
Kandinsky used color in a highly theoretical way associating tone with timbre (the sound’s character), hue with pitch, and saturation with the volume of sound. He even claimed that when he saw color he heard music.

Starting from this suggestion I worked on a pure programming languages to built a completely new machine that translated the audio signals into colors and shapes, in a very pictorial way.

Thank you for your performance resulting from your diligent
research and efforts to define and refine into performance art.
I am intrigued with the properties related to the work of some
giants in the field of vibrational sympathetic resonance such
as Rudolph Steiner and the performance arts which were
offspring of some common principles. I am interested in
more of the lovely harmonics and performance of such
pieces that you certainly have tapped into.
    Thank you
